Sonchus oleraceus L. extracts (ethanolic and aqueous) were evaluated for hepatoprotective activity against liver toxicity induced by paracetamol. Oral administration of both extracts at a concentration of 150 mg/kg b.w daily for 15 days showed a significant protection against-induced alteration in aspartate amino transferase (AST), alanine amino transferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activities and concentrations of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), protein thiols (Pr-SHs), reduced glutathione (GSH), by paracetamol. The results from the present investigation were supported by histopathological findings that demonstrated regeneration of hepatocytes in treated animals, which was indicative of the protective effects of the extracts. Thus the results obtained indicate that (ethanolic and aqueous) extracts of Sonchus oleraceus L. possess hepatoprotecive effect and these explicate justification of the use of this plant in the treatment of oxidative stress disease conditions.

Resistin is an adipokine mainly expressed in adipose tissue and was shown to be involved in hepatic glucose and lipid metabolism and appears to play a pivotal role in hepatic insulin resistance. It has been documented that serum resistin may be implicated in the progression of chronic liver diseases towards cirrhosis. This study was conducted to evaluate serum resistin level in patients with chronic HCV infection and to evaluate its effect on the clinical picture and progression of the disease. To fulfill this aim, 36 patients with a chronic HCV infection were classified into two groups. Group 1: Included 18 cases of chronic HCV infection without evidence of cirrhosis (compensated) and Group 2: Consisting of 18 cases of chronic HCV infection with evidence of cirrhosis (decompensated). As well as 16 normal subjects were enrolled as a control group (Group 3). Patients were further classified according to Child-Pugh classification that depends on the degree of deterioration of liver functions into three groups: Child A: 15 patients, Child B: 8 patients and Child C: 13 patients. All members of the study were subjected to thorough history taking, full clinical examination, abdominal ultrasound and laboratory investigations including CBC, ALT, AST, total and direct bilirubin, serum albumin, blood urea and serum creatinine. HCV virus antibody was detected by ELISA as well as estimation of serum resistin. The results of the study showed elevated serum resistin in both groups of chronic HCV as compared to the controls. The level of serum resistin was significantly higher in patients with HCV complicated with cirrhosis than compensated group. This finding may be of value in predicting the progress of HCV into cirrhosis. Moreover, according to the Child-Pugh classification serum resistin level was significantly higher in the diseased groups compared to control group. However, there was no significant difference between the various groups when compared to each other. Correlation study showed only positive correlation between ascites and serum resistin level. From the previous finding it could be concluded that monitoring serumresistin could be of value in the follow up of patients for prediction early detection ofhepatic decomposition. However, its use for grading of liver dysfunction is not yet justified.

Coverage of roots exposed by gingival recession is one of the main objectives of periodontal reconstructive surgery. Connective tissue graft (CTG) is preferred for treating most mucogingival recession defects and could be considered the gold standard. Chitosan is known to be natural polymers and it is available, biodegradable, biocompatible, and non-toxic and has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is an autologous source of platelet derived growth factor and transforming growth factor beta that play a role in periodontal regeneration. The present study was designed to evaluate and compare chitosan membrane with or without PRP versus CTG in the treatment of Miller Class I buccal gingival recession ≥ 4 mm in width in dogs histologically. Miller Class I buccal gingival recession defects were surgically created in upper and lower canine of dogs. After 4 weeks, the defects were randomly assigned to one of the three treatment modalities, connective tissue graft + coronally advanced flap, chitosan membrane + coronally advanced flap or chitosan membrane + autologous platelet-rich plasma + coronally advanced flap. . The animals were sacrificed using an overdose of anesthesia for histological examinations according to the following order: Two dogs were sacrificed at one month post-surgically and two dogs were sacrificed at two month post-surgically. The blocks were processed routinely in a way to obtain a panoramic view of the recession area for histological examination. Histological evaluation of the CTG revealed connective tissue fibers which were parallel to the root surface, and no histological evidence of new cementum, bone or periodontal ligament. On the other hand, histological evaluation of the chitosan membrane or chitosan membrane with PRP revealed new cementum, new bone formation, dense well organized highly cellular periodontal ligament fibers oriented perpendicular to the tooth surface and no migration of junctional epithelium. While CTG is the "gold standard" for root coverage in teeth with gingival recession the histological results of the present study revealed that CTG repaired by connective tissue. In contrast, the CAF with chitosan membrane with or without PRP was found to have all tissues necessary for regeneration, new cementum, well organized periodontal ligament fibers and new bone formation.

A square-wave voltammetric procedure for electroanalytical determination of Losartan (LOS) in its tablets, human urine and blood serum in Britton-Robinson buffer (pH 3.0, 0.1 mol L–1) as a supporting electrolyte were studied. The electrochemical stripping procedure for trace measurement of LOS was developed based on the adsorption of Cu (II)- LOS complex on a hanging mercury drop electrode and applied to quantification of the drug . Cyclic voltammetry was used to characterize the interfacial and redox behavior of the adsorbed Cu (II)- LOS complex. The solution conditions and instrumental parameters for quantitative determination were optimized and a linear variation ranging from 5×10-10 mol L-1 to 5×10-7 mol L-1 with detection limit (LOD) 1.87×10-10 mol.L-1 in presence of 5×10-7 mol.L-1 of Cu (II) ions for quantification of LOS. The sharp peak of the adsorbed Cu (II) - LOS complex associated with an effective interfacial accumulation of the drug with good recoveries. The observed data had been subjected to statistical analysis, which revealed high reliability and precision. The degree of interference from potentially present metal ions and organic compounds on (SWAdCSV) signal for Cu ( II) - LOS complex was evaluated. The intra-day relative standard deviation (RSDs) ranged from 0.331 to 0.418% at three different concentrations and inter-day RSDs ranged from 0.055 to 0.271%. The procedure was successfully applied to the quantification of the drug in human urine and serum samples. The mean percentage recoveries were 99.6 ± 0.15 and 98.0 ± 0.256, respectively. The determination of the LOS in its tablets was achieved using the standard addition method.

An experimental model for the multiple stage filtration (MSF) process has been designed which consists of Roughing Filter (RF) and Slow Sand Filter (SSF) and located at Giza Water Treatment plant. The results indicated the purification of water with levels of contamination well above those treated by SSF alone, and high efficiency in turbidity removal (90-99%). The overall efficiency is increased by reducing filter media size or rate of filtration. Turbidity removal contribution of RF to overall removal is around 77% and around 19% for SSF. MSF can handle turbidity level up to 30 NTU and give effluent turbidity less than 0.5 NTU. At rate of filtration higher than 0.25 m/hr, removal of turbidity deceases significantly. The SSF should be cleaned every two months to maintain a maximum head loss of 63cm.

Transportation is the movement of people and goods from place to other, as a result of the interaction between different social and economical activities in several separate places. So, the main role of traffic engineering is to deal with planning, geometric design and traffic operations for road networks, terminals and lands lie on roads to achieve safe, fast and convenient transportation for people and goods. The main role of transportation for human`s life, leads to continuous increase in traffic volumes, which results continuous increase of road traffic accidents, environmental pollution and delays (because of traffic congestions). Increase of road traffic accidents is considered the most dangerous result of increased traffic volumes, as it cause many fatalities, injuries and damaged properties. So, it mainly and directly affects the situation of road traffic safety in Egypt, which became very dangerous during last few years. After collecting traffic data for Cairo – Suez Highway from the Traffic Police Department, Ministry of Interior in Egypt, this paper carries out quantitative statistical analysis of these data and finally, explores a linear regression model between the number of road traffic accidents and the types of vehicles caused these accidents. Data processing is mostly done by SPSS.

Growth of population, increasing urbanization and industrialization, and the rather limited natural resources of potable water leading to serious deficits of freshwater in many regions in the world specially in middle east and golf area. Current water desalination techniques are energy intensive leading to inhibit the wide use of current sea desalination techniques. In this research a lab scale pilot was introduced using a special electrolysis circuit and vibrator producing a square wave powered by solar energy to decrease 35 % of the total dissolved salts/hour in sea water samples.

A Quest for Reviving the Past: Arabic Lines in English Translation and Terminology
Gehan
Anwar
By the late 1200s, medieval Europeans began to stir out of their long Dark-Age-sleep to become captivated by the scientific contributions of the Islamic civilization, the vital raw material on which the Western Renaissance built its structure. Arabic, the 'lingua franca' of the Medieval time, was the medium through which versions of Greek scientific and philosophical knowledge were recovered, translated, supplemented and transmitted to the Western World. Medicine was the biggest beneficiary of this knowledge as one of the first sciences that was given interest in writings. Some hundred years later, Latin Europe benefited from these translations. Once the Spanish city of Toledo was conquered by the Arabs, the Greco-Arab manuscripts were translated into Latin, the language of the learned in medieval Europe. As a result, a new method of translation was adopted, and Arabic medical terms found their way into western medicine, pharmacy and chemistry. This paper places emphasis on discussing the gradual emergence of Arabic influence in both language and translation within medieval Europe and Middle English. The Arabic role in the multilingual context and the process of the dissemination of Arab sciences in several centres in Europe are discussed. In addition, it presents a brief overview of how such contribution has left traces in modern and today’s medical English and the medical terms commonly derived from Arabic roots. Finally, this study is not to claim that Arabic is superior to other languages, but to focus on the role of the Arabic Language and translation in the Medieval Western medicine.
